How to Care for Embellished Juttis, Khussas and Flats

A little care goes a long way with festive footwear. Whether you are looking after embroidered juttis, embellished khussas or crystal-detailed flats, the aim is the same: lift away dirt without soaking the shoe, catching a thread or putting pressure on decorative work.

Zaria styles such as ZARAH Flat, with crystal-and-rhinestone straps on a soft gold base, and Zarlish Golden, with layered crystal floral embellishments, deserve a light touch. These are sandal styles, not embroidered juttis; the crystal-care advice below is especially relevant to their detailing.

Always follow any care instructions supplied with your particular pair. Materials, finishes and embellishment attachments vary, so this gentle routine is a starting point rather than a treatment for every stain.

1. Remove surface dust gently

After wearing, check for loose stones, lifted trim or snagged threads before cleaning. Hold the shoe by its base rather than its decoration. Use a clean, dry, very soft brush on unembellished fabric, working lightly in the direction of the weave or embroidery. Do not brush across raised threads or loose beadwork.

For crystals and gold-accent surfaces, use a soft, lint-free cloth with almost no pressure. Dab around raised details instead of dragging the cloth across them. Never scrape between stones, pull a loose thread or use a stiff shoe brush. Clean dirt from the sole separately so it does not transfer onto the upper.

2. Spot-treat only when needed

Blot a fresh spill straight away with a clean, dry white cloth. Do not rub or spread it. For a remaining small mark on a plain area, first check the supplied care instructions. If they allow damp cleaning, test a barely damp white cloth on a hidden spot and let it dry fully before treating the visible mark. Stop if colour transfers or the finish changes.

Keep moisture away from crystal settings, metallic finishes and decorative stitching. Avoid soaking, machine washing, bleach, alcohol, household stain removers and abrasive cleaners. Do not assume leather polish or a waterproofing spray is suitable for a mixed-material shoe. For oily stains, colour bleeding or marks within embroidery, ask a footwear-cleaning specialist before trying further treatment.

3. Handle moisture without heat

Avoid puddles and wet grass when possible. If your pair gets damp, blot gently and let it air-dry in a shaded, ventilated place. Do not use a hairdryer, heater or direct sunlight to speed things up.

For closed-toe juttis and khussas, loosely place plain, unprinted tissue inside to help support the shape and absorb moisture. Replace damp tissue, and do not pack the toe tightly. Leave footwear out until completely dry before putting it away; sealing a damp pair into a bag can trap moisture.

4. Store without crushing the embellishments

Give each shoe its own soft, breathable dust bag, or separate the pair with clean, unprinted tissue in a roomy box. Make sure the bag lining cannot catch on stones or embroidery. Keep soles away from decorative uppers, and never stack another pair on top.

Support closed toes loosely with tissue, leaving raised embellishments free from pressure. Store in a cool, dry cupboard away from direct sunlight and damp walls. Avoid tightly wrapped plastic bags. When travelling for a wedding, place the pair in a structured shoe box or protective compartment rather than beneath heavy clothes or cosmetics.

5. Prepare before the event

A few days before your occasion, take the pair out, check the fit on a clean indoor surface and inspect the straps, soles, stitching and decorative work. Allow time to seek help for anything loose; do not pull at a stone or attempt a last-minute repair with household glue.

On the day, let lotions and other products dry before putting shoes on, and apply perfume or hairspray away from them. Pack a soft cloth and consider a spare pair if rain or wet ground is likely. Afterwards, dust gently, air the shoes and return them to their protected space only once fully dry.

The simplest rule: less moisture, less friction and no pressure on the sparkle. A gentle routine helps your favourite occasion pair stay ready for its next outing.
